European market report (2017-08-29)

European equities ended today’s session in the red due to the rise in the concerns regarding the geopolitical issues in Asia as North Korea has fired a ballistic missile and passed over Japan. Abe reported that he would ask the UN to ramp up the pressure on Pyongyang as the missile is such a dangerous threat to the country. Moreover, this led the investors to focus on safe-haven assets.

The stock of Media and insurance were the biggest loser sector in the region amid the fears of investors regarding the political tensions between the United States and North Korea.

However, Miners stocks benefited from the rising in the geopolitical concerns, where Randgold and Fresnillo were the best performers in the area as both added around 4.5% and 2.5% respectively.

On the other hand, German broadcaster ProSiebensat 1 Media SE was the worst performer in Eurozone as the firm on Monday announced that TV advertising revenues in German-language markets expected to decline in the third quarter of this year.

In economic news, the consumer spending in France dropped by 0.7% in July and its GDP for the second quarter came in line with expectations at 0.5%. In the UK, the monthly housing price index fell by 0.1%, while yearly ones dropped from 2.9% to 2.1% during July’s month.

•          FTSE100:

UK’s equities ended today’s session in the red territory where FTSE100 down by 0.87% to settle at 7,337.43 as the losses in Telecommunication Services, Technology, and Consumer Cyclicals weighed on the shares.

Today’s falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on FTSE100 by 84 to 16, while 1 share remained unchanged.

The top performers on FTSE100 in today’s session were, Randgold Resources Ltd rose by 4.56%, Fresnillo PLC added 2.60%, and Anglo American PLC gained 1.05%.

However, the worst performers were, ITV PLC as its stock tumbled by 4.91%, meanwhile WM Morrison Supermarkets PLC fell by 3.70%, and Smurfit Kappa Group PLC lost by 2.94%.

•          DAX30:

German’s equities ended today’s session in negative territory as the losses generated by Industrials, Financials and Basic Materials pressured the equities. DAX 30 declined by 1.46% to close the session lower at 11,945.88.

Today’s declining stocks outnumbered rising ones with 30 losers, 0 gainers, and 0 flat shares.

The best performers of the session on the DAX 30 were, Beiersdorf AG edged lower by 0.08%, Fresenius SE & Co KGaA fell by 0.15%, and Vonovia SE dropped by 1.18%.

Meanwhile, the worst performers of the session on the DAX 30 were, Prosiebensat 1 Media SE shed 14.53%, Commerzbank AG lost 3.26%, and ThyssenKrupp AG declined by 3.09%.

•          CAC40:

French equities were also lower in today’s session where CAC 40 fell by 0.94% to settle down at 5,031.92 pressured by the losses in Utilities, Technology, and Industrials sectors.

Today’s losers outnumbered gainers by 38 to 2, and 0 shares remained flat.

The best performers of the session on the CAC 40 were, Vivendi SA gained 0.35%, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE added 0.16%, and Danone SA edged lower by 0.14%.

Meanwhile, the worst performers of the session on the CAC 40 were, ArcelorMittal SA dropped by 2.34%, Publicis Groupe SA fell by 2.32%, and Valeo SA declined by 2.29%.
